Let's get into it:
Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington, DC home was raided by federal agents with the Department of Homeland Security on Monday morning before agents were seen removing box upon box from the home and carting it away. The DOJ has secured a warrant for the raid, but details, as yet, have not been forthcoming.
"Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation," the DOJ said. Trump has maintained that the DOJ is working independently from the executive office.
Omar claimed that she's being politically targeted. In a post, she said "I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced."
Omar's story is that she came to the US as a refugee in 1995 when she was 12, moved with her family to Minnesota two years later, and was able to gain citizenship through her father, who became a naturalized citizen when she was 17. Omar has claimed that she gained citizenship automatically as a minor child. Her father fled Somalia after the government in which he was a high-ranking official collapsed.
However, there are concerns that have been raised by Minnesota's Alpha News, among others, that she was over 18 when her father was naturalized, meaning that she was not a minor who could be ushered in under her father's citizenship. In 2019, AJ Kern of Minnesota raised the concern, saying that Omar was 18 or 19 in 2000 and that her official birth year was changed from 1981 to 1982 in the Minnesota Reference Library.
While naturalization fraud has a 10 year statute of limitations, if she continued using a fake birthday on additional documents, that could extend the life of it. That this was a cause for the raid is only speculation.
Omar's sister pleaded guilty to wire fraud in the massive Feeding Our Future scheme, which primarily involved the Somali immigrant community. Omar has been credibly rumored to have married her brother, while she was still married to her first husband, Ahmed Hirsi, in order to gain both immigration access and student loans for him. It has been reported that she married her first husband in a Muslim ceremony in 2002 then married her brother in a Christian ceremony in 2009, filing that marriage with the state. The real marriage for Omar would have been the mosque marriage.
Omar and Elmi divorced in 2017 at which point she married Hirsi, with whom she has a daughter, a student activist, and then divorced him in 2019 to marry her campaign staffer. Her second husband, Ahmed Elmi is working on a thesis at Bristol University in the UK on "queerphobia in Kenya."
