Let's get into it:

After brief deliberations from the jury yesterday, Karmelo Anthony was convicted of the murder of Austin Metcalf. The two had words under a team tent during a rainy track meet at Memorial High School in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025. Anthony was told at least 15 times, witnesses say, to leave the team tent, refusing every time. Metcalf told Anthony to leave. Anthony dared Metcalf to touch him, there was a push, or a shove, depending on witnesses.

Anthony remained seated, then reached into his backpack, pulled out a knife, and stabbed Metcalf in the chest. Metcalf fell down the bleachers and died in the arms of his twin brother. Witnesses detailed those moments on the stand, and from inside the courtroom reports, those were black students and white students who were called to testify. By all accounts, this was not a race thing but a team turf thing that was met with deadly force.

After the conviction, jurors went back to deliberate on the sentence and delivered one of 35 years. Anthony will go from his family's million-dollar home to prison. He's a man now, at 19-year-old, so that will be a real grown man's prison. The whole trial took just 8 days to start and conclude.

A few things strike me about this: how protesters outside the court, and the media at large, have turned this into a race thing. From witness accounts, it does not appear to be the case. But for those who marched around outside advocating for Anthony to be granted his self-defense argument, it's all about how the white teen who was killed was in the wrong.

In fact, an appeal could be staged on the grounds that there were no black jurors, though those black jurors who were in the jury pool and were struck at the end by the prosecution were all teachers and were removed from the jury pool on those grounds, and not because of their race.

The other thing is just how many lives are ruined by this stupid, careless, craven act committed by Anthony, and how easily it could have been prevented. He brought a knife to a track meet; no reason to do that plus it was against the rules. He let his anger overwhelm him; he should have been able to control his emotions. He brandished the knife and stabbed over a seat; absolutely no reason to do that—even a hand-to-hand brawl would have been more reasonable.

Metcalf's brother, mother, father, entire family, and all his friends have to go through life now without him. That grief will never truly ease, it will always be with them. Anthony's mother, father, and friends have to watch him lose his freedom over something that could have been so easily prevented if the kid had any sense at all. They'll have to see him lose the ability to pursue life as he spends the prime of his life behind bars. And no punishment for Anthony can assuage the damage done to the Metcalf family. Lives are just ruined. And he probably should have gotten life in prison.
