Let's get into it:

ICE facility Delaney Hall has been the subject of protests this week as reports of hunger strikes within the detention center emerged, only to be shot down by DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who said the internal disturbance was over the provision of ethnic foods to illegal immigrant detainees. Democrats have said the conditions inside the facility are inhumane, but the Trump administration contends that those inside can leave anytime they want—so long as they return to their home countries.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called for Delaney Hall to be shut down, claiming there was no food or medical equipment, which turned out to be provably false. A Fox News reporter was cussed out as she stood outside the facility reporting. And even after a curfew was put into place, 20 were arrested Sunday night as they engaged in what DHS called a riot.

New Jersey's Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill, who made being part of the anti-Trump resistance a key part of her 2024 campaign to lead the Garden State, has opposed federal immigration enforcement. On Friday, as protests escalated and masked agitators clashed with law enforcement and ICE agents, she set up designated protest zones in an effort "to cool things down." Last year, both Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, son of black nationalist poet Amiri Baraka (neé LeRoy Jones), and Rep. LaMonica McIver were arrested at the facility. McIver was charged with assaulting an officer.

Mullin backed Sherrill's creation of a protest zone, saying it was a "win for law and order." Sherill, however, called for the facility to be closed. Detention facilities like these are a way station between arrest and deportation. Illegal aliens can stay in detention and wait for their immigration cases to be heard or, provided they have no criminal charges pending, they can go home to their original countries.

Mullin said again that "assaulting and obstructing ICE law enforcement is a crime and felony" and that "anyone who assaults law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The violence against law enforcement must end."

It didn't, though. Violence went on Friday night, into Saturday, and into Saturday night. The mayor imposed a curfew and even so on Sunday night 20 people were arrested.

On Saturday morning, Sherill said "Last night, masked individuals at Delaney Hall attacked the barrier in the protected protest area and began aggressive and dangerous actions against Newark and New Jersey State Police, including throwing projectiles, utilizing the barriers as weapons, and lighting tires on fire in the street." That's an admission that, despite leftist pundit and Democrat rhetoric, these are not peaceful protests.

"These actions put both peaceful protestors and law enforcement in danger," Sherill went on. "The police were not in protective gear; they had been on location since early in the morning ensuring protestors and counter protestors had areas to exercise their rights safely. As these dangerous actions took place, additional support was needed to protect civilians and law enforcement."

Later on in her statement, however, she said something truly bizarre: "I do not know why these individuals attacked or what they wanted to accomplish, but I refuse to let these dangerous actions detract from New Jersey's dedication to ensuring public safety, keeping people safe from ICE, and that the people detained inside Delaney Hall are treated with dignity."

We know why they attacked and what they wanted to accomplish. We've seen what the agitators want: total chaos, to harm law enforcement, and to prevent the law from being carried out. These are the same protesters, backed by the same social justice non-profits, funded by the same far left billionaires, who were out marching around and causing mayhem for other causes. Climate change, George Floyd and BLM, trans and LGBTQ, pro-Palestinian, and now anti-immigration enforcement, are all causes under the same banner.

Maybe Mikie Sherrill doesn't know why these demonstrators turned violent, maybe she knows and she's not saying, or maybe she just doesn't want to know. By Sunday, Delaney Hall was back under control. The protests had abated. DHS was able to allow family visitation again, and 6 people were arrested.

The federal government must be able to enforce immigration law. Nations have borders. I'm all for compassion, but mostly that compassion is for our fellow countrymen, not those who broke the law to come here then continued to break laws while living here.
