Let's get into it:
The Great American State Fair is set to kick off at the National Mall in Washington, DC, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. It's a momentous occasion, it's amazing we made it this far, it's something each and every American should be not only proud of but stoked to commemorate.
The party is scheduled to go on for two weeks, bringing in all 50 states, and has promised a massive line-up of musical talent for an "unforgettable celebration." Freedom 250 announced the line-up this week, saying that a whole heap of acts, not entirely what you'd call A-listers, but people who have a fan base, would be stepping out on stage to give it their all for the country we all love so dearly.
Martina McBride, Young MC, C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, The Commodores, Morris Day & The Time, Flo Rida, Bret Michaels, "and many more," Freedom 250 promised. The celebration was launched with President Trump's executive order establishing Task Force 250, an unprecedented nationwide celebration to honor this absolutely stellar moment in history.
It seemed like the type of thing we could all get behind, a big rollicking fete for us Americans to say, "hell yeah world, we're still here!" But of course, something like that in the era of Trump? Way too good to be true. Conservatives took to social media to critique the line-up because, as I said, these are all second-tier acts at best. But then, even worse, the acts started dropping out.
Only one has spoken up in favor. C+C Music Factory will go on with the show. In a rant, rapper Freedom Williams said no one could cancel him, that most of his audience is white anyway, likely Trump voters, that he doesn't like Trump—or Tiger Woods—that he doesn't care about the 250th anniversary, but that he absolutely would not listen to people telling him what to do. And he said all this while sitting on the toilet.
Morris Day posted "It's a no for me," calling off his June 27 concert. Milli Vanilli singer Jodie Rocco said she was surprised to see their group on the list of performers.
Young MC offered, "The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event. And despite the claims by the organizers that the event is non-partisan, SPIN magazine describes it as 'Trump-backed.' I hope to perform in DC in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged."
"Our music has always been our voice and we choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party. We support the betterment of all Americans," said The Commodores. Stupid Adam Kinzinger was excited about it because apparently, he likes it when our country does poorly.
Martina McBride issued a lengthy post to "clear the air," saying, "I will not be performing at the Great American State Fair on June 25th. I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading." She said she "asked lots of questions and was assured this was a nonpartisan event that was meant to celebrate ALL 50 states." She said that "is, in fact, not what is happening."
Bret Michaels quit, too, saying, "Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of. Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable. Because of that, I have made the difficult decision to step away from this performance."
It's sad, honestly, that these artists can't get past who the president is long enough to back the country that makes their lives possible, that gave them the prosperity they have, that facilitated their great American careers. It's a shame that they think that Trump, having said "y'know what, let's have a big rollicking party in our capital to celebrate our nation," is perceived as just a big GOP party. Loving America is nonpartisan.
Celebrating our 250th, I mean come on that's a serious achievement, it's not at all partisan, it's not political, it's a serious moment. If it were me and the president was someone I didn’t like, and let’s face it most of them are pretty unlikeable, I would be damned before I let some president stop me from bringing my absolute Sunday best to toast and salute my country. All those who quit are totally lame, absolutely, I have no respect for them or their decision.
