How's it going America,
Check out our latest episode of The Pod Millennial! I talk to the formerly incarcerated women's rights activist Amie Ichikawa about what it's like when men do time in women's prisons and college volleyball player Brooke Slusser on the blowback she got when she called out the injustice of having a man on her team. Brand new episodes drop every Tuesday! Listen, rate (5 stars, of course!), and subscribe!
Let's get into it:
After a few days where it felt like we were perhaps on the brink of nuclear war, in which Trump said a whole bunch of wild things, I am happy to inform you that World War 3 has, in fact been canceled. At least for the time being.
It was just two days ago (yes, 2) when Trump said: "Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F*ckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP" So many people freaked out about this. Even though it was hard not to laugh. The man is at least half a comedian. Right after that post, he said something like "Tuesday, 8 pm."
So of course, last night we were all waiting to see what happened. It could have been anything. At one point, maybe it was Monday (I can't believe it's only Wednesday), he said he was going to wipe out Iran's entire civilization. That got us all thinking: Is he gonna drop a nuke on that nation? And if he does, will anyone nuke us back? And if they do, am I personally in the blast zone?
Turns out it was all for naught. On Tuesday night, just an hour and a half before what we were all worried would be nuke-o'clock, Trump called the whole war off. Pakistan had gotten involved to help get the whole ceasefire deal over the hump.
"Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks."
Two weeks! Hegseth talked about it this morning live from the Pentagon, saying that the US used less than 10% of its military's total capacity and that the world's leading state sponsor of terror has been leveled, their commanders wiped out, their ability to create nuclear weapons gone.
"This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East. We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.
"Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP"
To be honest, that's quite a way to roll.
After that, he said, "A big day for World Peace! Iran wants it to happen, they’ve had enough! Likewise, so has everyone else! The United States of America will be helping with the traffic buildup in the Strait of Hormuz. There will be lots of positive action! Big money will be made. Iran can start the reconstruction process. We’ll be loading up with supplies of all kinds, and just “hangin’ around” in order to make sure that everything goes well. I feel confident that it will. Just like we are experiencing in the U.S., this could be the Golden Age of the Middle East!!!"
What's crazy is that the same people who set their hair on fire and ran around screaming that Trump was starting WW3 are the ones who, come 8 pm on Tuesday night, start complaining that Trump was too chicken to launch the attack. What they don't realize is that when Trump tweets out all that wild stuff about "crazy bastards," or says he's going to obliterate Iran back to the Stone Age, he's not talking to American media, or even the American public.
He's talking to America's adversaries in a language they can understand. What mattered was that Iran believed he'd do it if they didn't get on board with some kind of deal. And the fact of the matter is that if they hadn't, he very well could have. Every time you think you've got Trump pinned down, it turns out he's got another trick up his sleeve. I'm just glad he's on our side.
