1990s-era punk rock band Green Day is sticking it to the man. At a concert this week at the Los Angeles Kia Forum, Green Day launched into a political anti-Trump diatribe as they began their song American Idiot. "This song is anti-fascism. This song is anti-war. We stand up for our brothers and sisters in Minnesota. Ladies and gentleman Stephen Miller now has the floor," the lead singer said in a clip posted to the band's Instagram.
I will admit I was never a big Green Day fan; they seemed a little too mainstream punk rock for my obscure punk rock tastes, but apparently they are still drawing crowds. I wonder if they have new fans or are just drawing old fans who still like to rock out. One thing I noticed when I attended a Pixies concert over the summer was that the crowd was all people my age who looked like they were living out some fantasy of their younger era, and it made me never want to see the Pixies again. I don't like to fantasize about my younger years, I just like to be alive now.
During a recent concert in New Jersey, Boomer rocker Bruce Springsteen also yelled from the stage about Minnesota, saying "If you believe we don't deserve to be murdered for exercising your American right to protest... send a message to this president, and as the mayor of that city has said, ICE should get the f*ck out of Minneapolis.
It's not unusual to see aging entertainers spout off about political issues, and sure, they can go ahead and do so, especially if their audiences are into that kind of thing. But what does drive me nuts is the way they all seem to get the memo to focus on just-this-one-thing, whatever the current cause du jour is, and how they never deviate.
These are the same cats who were all in on climate, BLM, Covid, trans, Gaza, and now anti-ICE. I bet I left some out in that list, too. So it's hard to take them seriously when, like the Eye of Sauron, they just shift their penetrating stare to whatever the new hot thing is and go all in without being informed at all. Why do these celebs only care about what they are told to care about? Do any of them think for themselves?
For climate change, they all just decided en masse that identifying a problem meant that they knew the solution: recycling, renewable energy, oil is bad, not realizing that more people die each year globally from cold than heat. For BLM, they shouted that black lives matter as if anyone in America thought they didn't, and they believed made-up stats about cop shootings, when in 2024, for example, there were a little over 200 police shootings of black people, over 400 of white people, and over 300 of "race undetermined," per the Washington Post.
On Covid, they all backed the lockdown governments and sang Imagine from the backyards of their mansions or penthouse balconies. With trans, they just announced that trans women are women and you're racist if you disagree... or bigoted... something where you're bad for knowing biological facts. And they ignored the harm done to women by housing men in women's prisons or handing out women's trophies to fellas or naming men "women of the year" on magazine covers or erasing the word "mother" because it's offensive to men who think they are women.
With Gaza, they refuse to note that Israel left Gaza in 2005 and the Palestinian people elected terrorists to lead them (perhaps under duress, but still) and somehow blamed Israelis for being massacred by terrorists, including terrorists who had been workers in Israel, on Oct. 7, 2023.
Which brings us to anti-ICE. No one likes to see immigration officials going out and conducting arrests in people's homes. But they would not have to do it if the police turned over criminals who have immigration detainers to immigration officials. It is the sanctuary policies that are the problem.
But for these big celebs, they just say what the ACLU and all the others tell them to say. They don't care if they know anything, they don't do their own research, they just march along under the thumb of their leftist masters.
