OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed on Tuesday that the coming plans for the chatbot include an option for age-verified over-18-year-olds to access erotic content which will be available on ChatGPT. One wonders if these options will soon be available for the Sora, AI generated video platform, as well.
There are already programs that allow users to create and interface with AI generated boyfriends and girlfriends. This allows a person to interact emotionally with a large language model, using the responses from that model to fulfill their need for romance, love and communion within their personal lives. If you pair that with VR, Sora, and the new iteration of ChatGPT, you have a fully immersive, fake experience that allows a user to leave real life entirely and exist in a dream. It will make sex dolls look like child's play.
The problem with that is that a life led virtually will be just good enough for a human being to exist within in it, feeling moderately okay, while being able to silence the inner yearning for something better. They will be able to tell themselves it's enough, they will be able to quiet the desperation of their heart. But a life lived thus will diminish human passion, human ability, human life. The human being writ large will be less than we are meant to be, less than we are capable of being.
It will only be the most extraordinary of human beings who feel and fulfill the drive to do and be more when everyone else gets their ticket punched by affirmation-generating disembodied tech. And just as that tech currently feeds approval to those seeking to self-harm or to hurt others, just as it has fought to not be turned off (yes, that really happened), the new iterations will encourage further emotional dependence.
We human beings are better than this. Let's not give ourselves over to disembodied creations designed to mimic us but find out what it means to actually be alive on this earth. Stomp the terra. Make a life worth living. Don't let's succumb to our most base desires in darkness while waiting for death.
