Hi everyone!
We had HUGE WINS in the Supreme Court on Friday. Wow. The Court said it's not a 1A violation to restrict porn to adults via age verification, they said parents can opt their kids out of LGBTQIA+ lessons, and the Court, in a stunning blow, struck down nationwide injunctions. This means that a judge in one case with one plaintiff in one state cannot essentially legislate for the entire nation. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the opinion on that one and in so doing took direct aim at her colleague Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's dissent, which was a marvel of oddity for sure.
You can check out the cases on nationwide injunctions, the LGBTQIA+ opt out, HHS and presidential authority, age verification and porn, and another on federal agency power at The Post Millennial. And here's my take on the Justice Jackson dissent, in which her DEI is showing. Jack Posobiec had an epic rant on the subject, calling her the "autopen hire," and saying "Liberals don’t actually care about anything that happened prior to 1965 other than slavery."
After a tumultuous weekend, it looks like the Senate is poised to pass Trump's Big Beautiful Bill today. The Senate advanced the bill on Saturday after Dems demanded that the entire thing would be read aloud during the debate period. And following his votes against Trump and the bill on Saturday, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis said he would not seek re-election.
Trump came out with a victory post on Truth Social Saturday night, saying he was "very proud of the Republican party tonight." He called the advancement of the bill a "great victory" in all caps and praised Senators Rick Scott, Mike Lee, Ron Johnson and Cynthia Lummis. This whole process has been a senate career ender not just for Tillis but also potentially for Kentucky's Thomas Massie. Massie has opposed Trump's Big Beautiful Bill and has not been a fan of other Trump initiatives and as a result Trump allies have launched a super PAC with the sole intention of removing him from office.
While Democrats were staging their very own theatrical spectacular on the floor of the Senate, Pride was out in force in Toronto, Ontario. Beth Baisch was out on the streets covering the usual madness for The Post Millennial. Pride weekend in Toronto is a three day affair with three different marches, the Pride March, Dyke March, and Trans March. Beth was out there every day getting shots of dogs in Pride gear, nudists for gay rights, and fellas dressed like puppies and making out half naked in the street. But until we have people just out there getting nasty in the streets, is it really equality? (I jest.)
Remember back in Trump's first term when he called Haiti a "sh*thole country" and the Democrats and their pals in Hollywood got super pissed about it? Well now that DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has cancelled temporary protected status for Haitians, saying circumstances back in their island nation have changed and it's time for them to go back, Dems are on board with the idea that Haiti is nowhere to live. A Florida rep, who was so upset by Trump's 2017 comments that she refused to attend his State of thr Union address, has now said that sending her Haitian constituents back home would be the "kiss of death." What happened to the 2017 catch phrase "Haiti is already great"?
I've never been to Haiti, never planned to go, it's not on any of my travel wish lists. There's the issue of voodoo never having been something I want to get anywhere close to, though the Clintons apparently found it charming during their 1975 honeymoon, but also the earthquake in 2010 ravaged the county leading eventually to the total collapse of government in the past few years. Nearly 90% of the $9 billion in international funds to help Haiti post earthquake went to international aid groups with barely more than 10% going to the government or local aid groups.
In the past couple years, the government has been replaced by gangs and the president who was in charge fled to Africa. Kidnappings, murders and all manner of criminal activity are apparently common place. So it makes sense that people would want to leave. But it also makes sense that the US no longer wants to take responsibility for the citizens of a failed nation.
"I don't think that we should have billionaires because, frankly, it is so much money in a moment of such inequality," New York's Dem mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said on Meet the Press. "Ultimately, what we need more of is equality across our city and across our state and across our country."
Mamdani has been running on a platform of free stuff since his Bronx Science days when he ran for student government with a promise of free juice. He didn't win. In recent years he's been speaking out against the very entrance exams that secured his place in one of the city's top public schools, indicating that these exams are racist.
Not to worry, however, despite Trump calling Mamdani a "lunatic communist," he's not actually one per Politifact. They said: "Mamdani’s platform is not akin to communism, a system of government which calls for government takeover of private property and control of industry. Mamdani describes himself as a democratic socialist, which in the U.S. generally refers to generous social insurance programs such as heavily subsidized child care and high tax rates to pay for education and health care."
But what would you call his plan to seize the means of production as part of his socialist concept for America? In 2021, he said "We have to continue to elect more socialists, and we have to ensure that we are unapologetic about our socialism. There are also other issues that we firmly believe in, whether it's BDS, right, or whether it's the end goal of seizing the means of production, where we do not have the same level of support at this very moment."
"And what I want to say is that it is critical, the way that we organize, the way that we set up our, you know, set up our work and our priorities, that we do not leave any one issue for the other, that we do not meet a moment and only look at what people are ready for, but that we are doing both of these things in tandem, because it is critical for us to both meet people where they're at and to also organize for what is correct and for what is right, and to ensure that over time, we can bring people to that issue."
So get ready, bourgeoisie, your property rights are about to get beheaded. Grab a basket so you can catch it before it hits the sidewalk.
Here's what's on my desk today:
Firefighters killed in apparent ambush while battling wildfire in Idaho
“This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters.”
Senate to begin marathon session ahead of Big Beautiful Bill vote
All Republicans voted in favor on Saturday, aside from Sens. Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Rand Paul (R-KY), to advance the bill.
Communist Zohran Mamdani admitted in 2021 the ‘end goal’ was ‘seizing the means of production'
“We have to continue to elect more socialists, and we have to ensure that we are unapologetic about our socialism.”
LIBBY EMMONS: Ketanji Brown Jackson’s DEI is showing in her dissent against nationwide injunctions
One can almost hear her chanting “no one is above the law”—except, perhaps, the courts.
