Jun 6, 2025 | šŸ’” Trump, Musk's "big beautiful" breakup goes public

Brought to you by Meriwether Farms

Hi everyone!

All the media outlets are having a field day with the rift that appeared in full force yesterday between President Trump and Elon Musk. It's being called a divorce, a feud, or the end of a bromance, but whatever you call it, it's clear that the alliance of convenience between Musk and Trump has come to a bitter end. "Broooos please noooooo  We love you both so much," Kanye West said on X. But breakups are always hard, especially for the kids involved.

Musk was a huge Trump fan after ditching the Democrats, and who could blame him? Trump promised free speech, border security, a merit-based marketplace not overly impacted by government regulation, and an end to foreign wars. Musk offered cash, social media cheerleading, and tech bro legitimacy. It always seemed a bit weird to me because, well, Elon seems a little weird to me, but billionaires tend toward the weird.

The whole thing spun out of control because Musk doesn't like the One, Big, Beautiful Bill that's sitting in the Senate right now after being passed in the House. Musk lashed out, saying it was too much spending. Trump defended the bill, said Musk was a disappointment, and that Musk didn't like the slashing of EV subsidies. Musk said Trump was involved with Epstein and said he wanted to create a new political party. Trump said he was gonna cut Musk's government contracts. Musk said he was gonna take his rocket ship and go home. Musk said Trump should be impeached. Bill Ackman jumped in and said let's work it out. Steve Bannon said to deport Musk (he's a citizen) and commandeer Space X. Musk said he would not strand NASA astronauts on the International Space Station. It was quite a bit of back and forth.

In the light of Friday morning, there are a bunch of rumors flying about will they or won't they have a phone call and get it all patched up. And a bunch of people keep taking sides on socials. ABC's Jonathan Karl called Trump at like 6:15 this morning and Trump picked up, telling Karl Musk is "the man who has lost his mind." The Tesla people are likely feeling a little weird now after slamming Musk, loving their cars, hating Trump, and putting bumper stickers on about it all. Who even knows? I'm sure we'll keep hearing about it because both men are loud and in charge of big things and the media has a love affair with drama—the stories are easy to write, require little research, and touch on the current moment. Who wouldn't want that on a summer Friday?

Chuck Schumer agrees with Musk, and so do a lot of X accounts run by people in foreign countries. Caroline Wren reports that after Musk told his 20 million followers to call their reps to say "no" to the bill, nothing happened. No calls. It's like the people voted for Trump and not Musk or something. My guess is Trump will keep the White House and Musk will be back to couch surfing. Musk just doesn't have real political power. He was a guest at the table.

That Worcester, MA city councilor who obstructed an ICE arrest of an illegal immigrant with a criminal history has been charged herself with one count of assault and battery and another of interfering with police. "Our community continues to be shocked and devastated by the events on Eureka Street as our country staggers from political upheaval. It is frustrating to now be targeted by this criminal prosecution as well. I am a mother, an immigrant and elected leader who attempted, along with other Worcester residents, to protect a traumatized young person, two mothers and an infant. I did the humane thing to do in this situation, nothing more, nothing less," Etel Haxhiaj said.

I have this idea that perhaps the Dems want to see arrests happen out in the community, that this is part of their plan. So-called sanctuary laws in states like New York, Massachusetts, Colorado, California, and others mean that local law enforcement is prevented from working with federal law enforcement. When an illegal immigrant is arrested and released, local officials are forbidden from alerting ICE and handing that person off to federal officials.

What happens next? Those federal agents have to go into communities, out to homes and workplaces, to track down the person local law enforcement released. When ICE encounters that person out in the field, they are apprehended and arrested. If there are other illegal immigrants with that person, those persons are arrested and detained as well.

If local law enforcement were allowed to hand the criminal illegal immigrant over to ICE, ICE would never end up out in the community, interacting with other illegal immigrants who hadn't committed additional crimes. The Democrats would never get their footage showing ICE agents looking barbaric out in the field making arrests in the street. If local law enforcement just handed over the criminals, all those other people not on anyone's radar would be spared. It's like they want it to happen.

Here's what's on my desk today:
