Hi everyone!
Two judges were arrested late last week for harboring illegal immigrants. One judge was literally harboring Tren de Aragua gang members on his property, allowing them to live there and have access to guns, law enforcement says. The other heard ICE was waiting for her defendant to finish in court so he could be detained and stopped the trial early to allow the defendant and his lawyer to leave through a side door to avoid ICE.
In New Mexico, a judge who resigned last month after accusations that he was allowing Tren de Aragua gang members to live on his property with access to firearms, was arrested. He and his wife were taken into custody after it was discovered that at least one Tren de Aragua gang member had been living on his property and keeping guns there.
The judge was arrested on charges of evidence tampering for allegedly having destroyed the gang member's phone. The former Dona Ana County Magistrate Judge Jose Luise "Joel" Cano said at the time of his arrest that he smashed the phone with a hammer and then threw away the rest because he was worried the phone's contents, photos and videos, would reflect badly on the Tren de Aragua-suspected tenant. He has been charged with the federal crime of tampering with evidence and his wife is charged with conspiracy to tamper with evidence.
Cano said he didn't know the men were Tren de Aragua, citing the "rigorous" vetting process the men were subjected to when they crossed the US border. The men told Cano and his wife that they were asylum seekers who came into the US in 2023, at the height of the Biden administration's border crisis.
The FBI arrested the judge in Milwaukee under accusations that she helped an illegal immigrant evade ICE. Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan is said to have led the defendant out of the courtroom, where he was facing charges of battery, domestic abuse, and infliction of physical harm against his roommates. Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a citizen of Mexico, is alleged to have punched his roommate 30 times and then hit a woman who tried to intervene.
He was slated for removal in January 2013 and was deported at that time. When he came back it was via illegal entry and ICE sought to deport him after Flores-Ruiz's fingerprints were transmitted to federal databases following his recent arrest. Dugan told officers to consult the Chief Judge prior to the arrest, but then Flores-Ruiz and his attorney were seen leaving the room through a door that was not open to the public.
An officer followed them into an elevator, then outside, where he called in for backup. Flores-Ruiz was arrested after a brief chase. Dugan was arrested. Another judge in Milwaukee said she wouldn't hold court until Dugan was released. Dugan was charged with obstructing immigration officers and concealing someone to prevent arrest.
You'll hear pundits and Democrats scream that it's an abomination, a travesty, a breach of justice and all that is holy to arrest these judges. But the fact of the matter is that no one is above the law—have we heard that somewhere before? These judges must be afforded due process, but obstructing the ability of federal officers to bring a case against gang members or trying to prevent officers from arresting a man who is in the country illegally as he stands trial for crimes does not at all seem to be in keeping with judicial behavior.
London's mayor launched a program to fight antisemitism, Islamophobia, and racism in response to the murder of three British girls by the son of Rwandan immigrants. The pilot of that doomed Black Hawk helicopter that took out an entire passenger jet in January didn't listen to her co-pilot who warned her there was a problem. Zelensky and Trump met at St. Peter's Basilica on the sidelines of the Pope's funeral. A bunch of universities are trying to band together to fight Trump before their funding is slashed too, and the Democrats may be gearing up for yet another impeachment attempt should they gain the House in the 2026 midterms.
I had a great time talking to Karol Markowicz last week about Brooklyn, the apocalypse, and making art. You can check it out here.
